MICK GALLAGHER

Corby Town Football Club are sad to announce the passing of former Steelman Mick Gallagher. Mick was born on June 5th 1935 and joined the Corby Town youth system under Wally Akers but it was only after a spell in the navy three years later that he began to rise up through the ranks at Occupation Road. In 1956/57 he was a regular member of the club's A team at either wing half or inside forward and by 1959/60 he had graduated to the second XI. In 1959 Mick also captained a Corby Town team to success in a six-a-side tournament held at the Uppingham/Corby Boys Club. Mick made his only competitive first team appearance in a single goal Samaritan Cup defeat at home to Kettering Town in March 1959 although he did also appear in a friendly fixture at Ilford the following month which also ended in a 1-0 defeat.
In 1962 Mick moved on to Stewarts & Lloyds FC and remained with them until he hung up his boots in 1970. He then turned to coaching and was invited back to Corby Town as youth team coach by Ken Burton in the early 1970's. In 1978/79 the Steelboys finished as runners up to Luton Town in the Chiltern Youth League but in 1979 the Corby Town youth team was disbanded and Mick moved on to Cottingham.
He did later return to the Steelmen for another spell as youth team coach alongside Bev Ironmonger and continued to be a regular supporter at both the Rockingham Triangle and Steel Park
Everyone at Corby Town FC send their condolences to Mick's family and friends.
